Martin Brings Masses of Talent to the Masses

Charlotte Martin has talent.

Masses and masses of talent.

She has a degree in opera and has been playing piano since she was four-years-old, and knows how to write a song. In the EP that I obtained of what I assume is her demo, she definately struts her stuff. The CD cranks up with a tune called "Silver Honey" which fully demonstrates her piano work-which borders between Tori Amos and Ben Folds.

Her lyrics generally hold a lot of vulnerable information about her life and experiences. She has an extremely naked approach to her writing that makes you feel as if you have known her your whole life.

My favorite piece on this album has to be "Pretty Thing" with a twinkly piano and very nice drum beat, where she proclaims: "I am not your pretty thing/your seventeen/your prom queen anymore."

I also am very fond of "One girl Army," which is Charlotte's tribute to all the strong women who have came and gone in her life. With the chorus stating: "Chin up every eye's on you/we don't guess the way you are/cause things are fine when everything is never fine/a one girl army up against the whole world."

One thing about her, her choruses definately stick in your head for hours, and this CD is really well done to be just a demo EP. She seems to have the definate potential to take over the whole world if she wanted to. She has an immense amount of soul in her voice too, it's as if she has lived quite a life to sing about, and she can seriously sing about it too.

The only drawback to Charlotte Martin that I see, is that she reminds me immensely of Tori Amos, and her earlier work. Even her lyrics are very alike, and she definately has just as much talent as Tori, but it's almost eerie how similiar the music is. Even her vocals tend to trail off in an uncanny Tori Amos manner. I am hoping with the rest of Charlotte's album being in production as we speak, that she will experiment in some different sounds, so she does not get branded in this "girl-at-a-piano-look-at-me-I'm-emotional" group.

I downloaded a song off the site called "Everytime it Rains" that wasn't as Tori-ish so I think she is going to have some more variety on her LP.

But other than that one issue, I really think we will hear big things coming from this girl. She sounds like she could possibly be a "one girl army."
