1. Anyway
|
Out of Nowhere, the debut album from newcomer Chris Campbell, is an impressive first offering, particularly because it contains only original songs. The CD features superb instrumentation, well-developed vocals, and clever songwriting. The album, released in March of 2003, was recorded, mixed, and produced in Campbell's home studio in Lexington, Kentucky. "Anyway," the album's first track, serves as a strong opener with it's catchy chorus and emotionally-charged vocals. The song speaks of looking back on past mistakes, a theme with which nearly every listener can sympathize. All of the songs deal with familiar themes, from love and success to disappointment and regret. "My lyrics are very personal and mean something to me, and maybe other people could relate to that," Campbell said in an interview late last year. The familiarity of subjects addressed in Campbell's songs makes his music very approachable. The album is true testimony of Campbell's gifted songwriting. It embodies a mature flow, something which many musical artists do not initially possess. The CD's eleven tracks share a distinctive style without all sounding the same. To those who have heard Campbell's earlier demos, it is evident that his style has since matured and improved. "I think I'm getting a lot better at integrating melody into songs," Campbell said. "I'm saying, 'I can do better with this,' and then I'm getting better at it," he added. Campbell deserves to be proud of his progress, as his melodies are both memorable and interesting. "City Man" and "Disheveled" are especially well-constructed. The album's instrumentation further enhances it's songs. The piano and keyboards, played by both Campbell and Mac Jarboe, are especially enjoyable. Campbell also uses some unique effects within the tracks; for example, "The Rain" opens with sounds of a storm. Campbell's energized vocals give Out of Nowhere a "live" feel. "Living Proof," the album's vocal highlight, convinces the listener that Campbell is truly having fun with his music. His voice shows classic singer-songwriter elements, sometimes resembling Elton John or John Denver. Campbell was greatly influenced by classic folk and rock artists, but the album proves that his range of influences is indeed much wider. For example, "Never Again (Not Today)" clearly displays his bluegrass and country influences. Perhaps the album's only flaw is it's lack of vocal harmonies. Many of the songs could be enhanced by some layering of voices. Overall, Out of Nowhere is a must-have for singer-songwriter enthusiasts or for anyone wanting to hear fresh talent. A mature and ambitious freshman release, it is especially impressive for it's melodies and instrumentation.
