Amongst the many cliché singer-songwriters, Edward Aten stands out with his honest lyrics and unique melodies. Today, you can go purchase any "acoustic guitar player's" album and listen to the twelve or thirteen ordinary and repetitive love tracks. With "oneinvisiblestar" comes a variety of emotive songs about real life. Aten is a typical 22 year-old who has experienced the same things as the majority of his peers. From being the heartbreaker to being the heartbroken, Aten's love songs are mature and direct, lacking the sappiness and sugar-coating that many other musicians offer. His gift of writing from an alternative perspective is an inventive and unique way to look at relationships. "Life is too short to sing about one thing. I'm going to sit down with my guitar and write about where I am, where I was, where I wish I could be, and the fact is I'm not going to be in love all the time. I'm not always going to be chewing bubble gum. What my listener gets is me, and I'm not afraid to tell you what is on my mind." Aten introduces oneinvisiblestar with "Puddle," which stands out with its creative and impressive guitar technique. "She" follows as Aten brings the listener the feeling of being in a gloomy underground jazz club, sitting at a round candlelit table, listening to the pulsating bass and passionate lyrics. "When you touch me/ you're like a parachute/ and you see me falling/ and you wait." His smoky vocals are smooth throughout the song which is balanced out with "Mafia," one of the most passionate songs on the CD. The hammering of the piano and drums creates a complicated, harder track, paralleling Aten's tense vocals. "First Date (After Me)" is a confident story of a girlfriend's hypothetical first date after him. This simple, catchy tune is one of the more "pop" songs on the album. "Haunted" is a catchy song which is bound to be stuck in your head for days. Referred to as his "Irish drinking song," "Haunted"'s edgier guitar riffs are combined with an addictive chorus to create a beguiling and memorable track. "My house may be haunted/ but at least I'm not alone." Aten closes the album with "Model," a flawless romantic ballad which begins with gentle and sincere vocals framed by a soft piano. A touching song, this is Aten's vocal showcase, hitting forceful notes which will send a shiver up your spine. It's powerful sound leaves it as one of the most understated, yet dominant songs on the album. Edward Aten presents a moving and original debut album with oneinvisiblestar. "I try to play acoustic music the same way photographers use black and white, clear and discernible, the dream like feature of black and white. Like something you see everyday, but less is more. They cut the color, I try to cut the filler." From track one to track twelve, Aten conveys a mixture of songs about love, jealousy, death, breaking up, and longing. oneinvisiblestar offers an original and candid look into the ups and downs of relationships and life. |
