One thing
about Johnny M. is that each show is a truly unique experience.
He caters to the mood of the crowd and plays off their vibe.
Despite his ever growing popularity, Mayers casual stage
presence seems more like he is playing for a few fans than
in front of a sold out venue. John often becomes so enthralled
with his music, that he is taken away from his screaming fans.
Yet at every show he manages to connect with the crowd in
a different way. "Touring and playing a show every night
is just like watching one of your favorite movies several
times in a row but with different friends each time,"
John says. "I get to take it all in every night and see
what they think is funny and what's not funny, see what touched
them and what didn't, and talk about it with them at the end."
He even goes as far to base his cover artists on the crowd
and they vary from the extremes of Jimi Hendrix to N'Sync.
Thankfully at the July 22nd show Rochester Hills, MI John
realized his audience and we didnt hear any Dirty
Pop but we did hear the ever so popular The Wind
Cries Mary. Johns fans are typically college coeds
and he made fun of this narrow range of fans even more so
at the Meadowbrook show. He called out to a packed venue that
consisted largely of college age girls, Who has a penis?
Getting a laugh out of the crowd, a young man called back
to Mayer, John I want to have your babies!
I would
have to say starting off the set with 3X5 and 83 is always
a good way to go. About mid show John broke into a little
Love Song for No One. The girls continued to cry
out as if John was singing his Love Song about them Searching
all my days just to find you / I'm not sure who I'm looking
for / I'll know it / When I see you / Until then, I'll hide
in my bedroom / Staying up all night just to write / A love
song for no one Not soon after John went into the long
awaited single No Such Thing. He must get a kick
out of seeing 6000 fans scream at the top of their lungs every
last line. Just before the Neon encore, he sung
the sincere lyrics of Why Georgia where John questions,
I wonder sometimes about the outcome of a still verdictless
life / Am I living it right? Dont worry John after
a sold out show like that night you seem to be right on to
me.
When Meadowbrook
amphitheatre show sold out in record time, radio stations
from the Detroit metro area were astounded. They would be
even more amazed to hear that the show was oversold by about
2000 people. One radio station even commented how did such
a new artist with only one hit single (No Such Thing) have
sell out so fast. Well I hate to break it to them, but John
has been a big deal in the college scene from coast to coast
for quite some time now. And really every track on his album,
Room for Squares, has the potential to be over
played on the radio waves. His true success and popularity
is unknown to this stations because John has relied more on
word of mouth and his dedicated reps to make his music known.
